THE WORK AFTER THE WORK

The story of Nehemiah is not simply the story of a man who built a wall. It is the story of a man who became burdened for something that was broken, prayed until God opened a door, worked despite opposition, finished what God put in his heart and then realized that finishing the wall was not the end of the work.

1. Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem was broken — Nehemiah 1
2. God opened the door for Nehemiah to go — Nehemiah 2
3. The people began building together — Nehemiah 3
4. Opposition came while they were building — Nehemiah 4–6
5. The wall was finally finished — Nehemiah 6
6. After building the wall, Nehemiah guarded what they had built — Nehemiah 7
7. Then the attention moved from the wall to the Word — Nehemiah 8

The physical restoration of Jerusalem was not enough. Now God wanted the spiritual restoration of His people. The people gathered together and made an in Nehemiah 8:1

Nehemiah did not work for fifty-two days just to stand back and admire a wall. Once the wall was finished, another work began the work of protecting what God had given them and bringing God’s people back under the authority of His Word.

The wall needed rebuilding. Then the wall needed guarding. But ultimately, the people needed changing. And that work was greater than the wall. THE WORK AFTER THE WORK

Sometimes the most dangerous moment is not before the victory, but after it.

The battle seemed won but Nehemiah understood something we often forget: Just because the work is finished does not mean the responsibility is finished.

It is possible to work hard to build something and then become careless enough to lose it.

That is why after Nehemiah built the wall, he put a watch upon it. And after guarding the wall, they opened the Word of God. Because God was not merely interested in rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls. He wanted to rebuild Jerusalem’s people.

There is a work required to build, but there is another work required after you have built. What are we doing with what God has allowed us to build?

I. WHAT GOD ALLOWED US TO BUILD MUST BE GUARDED (Nehemiah 7:1-3)

The first words of chapter 7 are important: “When the wall was built” For fifty-two days they had worked. They had faced opposition and mockery.

Some of our greatest battles begin after our greatest victories.

Be careful that the answer to yesterday’s prayer does not become the reason for our today’s prayerlessness just like the Story of Nehemiah the wall being strong does not mean the watchman can sleep.

1 Corinthians 10:12 KJV Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
Sometimes we pray harder to receive the blessing than we pray after receiving it.

Proverbs 4:23 KJV Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Before somebody ruins his testimony publicly, it will always something usually happened privately.

Marriages collapse because of little things were left unguarded for years and major spiritual failures often begin with small gates that were left open.

We inherited examples of faithful Christians. Someone guarded those things before we arrived.

2 Timothy 1:13–14 KJV Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

Do not assume that because something is strong today it will automatically remain strong tomorrow

II. WHAT GOD ALLOWED US TO BUILD MUST BE ENTRUSTED TO FAITHFUL PEOPLE (Nehemiah 7:2-3)

A strong wall still needs faithful people. Nehemiah could not guard Jerusalem alone. He could not stand at every gate. He could not inspect every section. He could not watch every house. So Nehemiah began placing responsibility into the hands of other people and notice carefully what the Bible says about Hananiah “for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.”

Ability without faithfulness eventually becomes a liability.

1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”
Faithfulness is not an optional quality for a servant of God.

God is not merely looking for people who can. God is looking for people who will.

Faithfulness is not proved by one great moment. Faithfulness is proved by repeated obedience in ordinary moments.

Luke 16:10 KJV “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.”
Before asking God for a larger assignment, become faithful with your present assignment.

HANANIAH HAD TWO QUALIFICATIONS at Nehemiah 7:2: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

Proverbs 9:10 KJV The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

If your service only works while somebody is watching you, something is wrong with your service.

Everybody cannot do everything, but everybody can do something. Do not confuse being seen with being significant.

Colossians 3:23–24 KJV And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

If you have accepted a ministry, take it seriously. Prepare and show up! If you cannot fulfil something, communicate. Do not make other people constantly wonder whether you are coming. Do not treat God’s work as something you do only when nothing else is happening.

Nehemiah 7:3 .. every one to be over against his house.
Before we become concerned about everybody else’s wall, we should pay attention to what is happening near our own house.

III. WHAT GOD ALLOWED US TO BUILD MUST BE GOVERNED BY THE WORD OF GOD (Nehemiah 8:1)

God did not bring Nehemiah to Jerusalem merely to produce better walls. God wanted better people and walls cannot change hearts.

The great accomplishment of Nehemiah 6 was: Nehemiah 6:15 KJV “So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.” But two chapters later, the attention is no longer on the wall. Because God’s greatest concern was never the stones. It was the souls living behind those stones.

John 17:17 KJ “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
If we want Christians who can survive temptation, persecution, disappointment and discouragement, Give them the Word.

There is something healthy about a church that develops an appetite for Scripture.

1 Peter 2:2 KJ As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
You can attend church for years and remain spiritually immature if you never allow the Bible to correct you.

There is a great difference between having a Bible and being governed by the Bible. For the saved person, there must always be a final authority. And our final authority is the Word of God.

Psalm 119:105 KJV Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
We should never create a church culture where people are comfortable with everything except correction. If people only want encouraging sermons, they will remain spiritually weak.

Nehemiah built a wall around Jerusalem. That wall could help keep enemies outside. But there was something the wall could never do. The wall could not change the hearts of the people inside.

Nehemiah 8:9 KJ “…For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.”
Why were they weeping? Because Scripture was revealing their condition. The wall had been broken for years. But now something deeper was being revealed Their spiritual condition of the people of Jerusalem was broken too.

When was the last time God’s Word genuinely corrected you?

CONCLUSION — THE WORK AFTER THE WORK

James 1:22 KJV But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

ILLUSTRATION, THE RELAY RACE
A relay runner can run an incredible race. He can gain a huge lead. He can sacrifice everything. But eventually, he must put the baton into another person’s hand. If the baton is dropped, all the previous running does not remove the tragedy.

That is ministry. We are not only running for ourselves. We are carrying something that must eventually be handed to somebody else. The Gospel. That is why we guard the wall. That is why we develop faithful people. That is why we keep opening the Book.

Isaiah 40:8 KJV The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

BRING THE BOOK. Because the greatest work is not merely the wall we build around the people. The greatest work is what God does inside the people through His Word. And that is THE WORK AFTER THE WORK.
